Yiddish, Latvian, Russian, German — four languages at one kitchen table, and one boy who can't translate the joke back to you. Riga, spring 1939. A family argues over black bread and a newspaper. Two years later the same city has a different voice, one room per family, and a coat with something sewn onto it. Ten songs about a place, a people, and everything that was taken away. Nobody in these songs knows what is coming. That is the point: this is a record about how they lived — the sewing machine, the tram beyond the fence, the mathematics teacher straightening his tie out of habit. The family is invented.
