Ten songs about the fine print under America's most familiar promises: own a home, look good, work hard, get a degree, trust the news, call for help, hustle, insure the house, pay what you owe. Nobody in these songs is lying. Everything is disclosed. It's just disclosed very quietly, somewhere near the bottom of the page. A dark satirical cabaret told from inside the supper club — Vegas swing, motivational brass, a call-centre waltz, a graduation march, and a gospel finale sung by a man who paid exactly what he owed. The satire points up: at institutions, sellers and power. Never at the people standing in the queue.
